Swagelok League Swimming News

by isleofman.com 24th November 2009

In the third Swagelok League Match of the season, Douglas Club extended their leading margin with 103 points and Southern Club hung on to their second spot over Ramseian, with both clubs scoring 72.

In the 9 and 10-year age groups, Douglas had a clean sweep in the girls’ events and Ramseian in the boys.

On a busy night for the 10-year-olds, Ciara Cassidy and Jamie Corlett displayed their all round talent by each winning all four events, 25m breaststroke and butterfly and 50m backstroke and freestyle.

Victoria Watson (Douglas) was runner-up to Ciara in the breaststroke and freestyle and third in the backstroke, whilst Alex Whitfield (Ramseain) took second spot in the butterfly and backstroke and tied for third place in the other two races with her team mate Kaitlyn Convery.

Eoghain Sherrard (Ramseain) came away with three third places behind Jamie Corlett, but had to settle for 4th in the breaststroke, where the second spot went to Zak Callister (Douglas), who also finished third in the butterfly and freestyle.

Cara Bregazzi was the double winner in the 9-years 25m freestyle and 50m breaststroke, with Southern’s Ciara Danes runner up and Evie Brown(Douglas) third in both races.

Joshua Corteen showed all the opposition a clean pair of heals in the corresponding boys events.

In the open events, Poppy Evans (Ramseian) and Phillip Harrison (Douglas) each won all three events, the 50m and 200m breaststroke and 100m freestyle.

15-year-old Poppy was a clear winner in the breaststroke events, with times of 36.29 and 2 min 47.47, but has a host of younger swimmers getting ever closer, including 14 year old Hannah Howitt (Southern) and Douglas’s Laura Kinley, 13, who had their own private battle for the minor places.

Laura had the edge in the sprint event but had to give way to Hannah in the longer swim, with both girls recording pbs in both swims.

Such was the quality of the 200m race that all but two of the top 12 finishes set new pbs, it was particularly pleasing to see several 12 and 13-year-olds posting very respectable times.

Catherine Breed (Southern) pushed Poppy all the way in the 100m freestyle, and was particularly unlucky to be beaten by 3 hundredths of a second, having been ahead at the half way mark, but got her revenge later on by winning the 15 and over 50m freestyle

Tom Kelly (Southern) was not far behind Phillip in all the open races along with the 15 and over 50m freestyle.  The 15 and over 100m butterfly races were won by Olivia Rawlinson for Ramseian and Tom Isaac for Douglas.

In addition to their improving breaststroke swims, Hannah Howitt won both the 50m freestyle and 100m butterfly in the 14-years age group, and Laura Kinley the 100m breaststroke for 13-years.  Charlotte Atkinson (Douglas) won the 13-years 100m freestyle in 1min 03.58, but was beaten by team mate Allana Kelly in the 50m backstroke.

Competition was hot in the 12-years girls races, with Stephanie Brew and Katie Callow, both for Ramseian, taking the top two spots in all three races.

Both girls produced massive PBs in the 100m backstroke, with Steph coming out the victor in 1 min 16.23 to Katie’s 1 min 17.10.

They finished in the same order in the 50m butterfly, but the names were reversed in the 50m freestyle, with Katie coming home in 30.48 to Steph’s 31.12.  Douglas swimmer, Paige Lace, was third in all three races, and also managed three new pbs.

11-year-old Amy Kinley was not to be outdone by big sister, Laura, and swam a superbly paced 200m individual medley to just out touch Ramseian’s Amy Stoutt.

Despite the backstroke being the weakest leg of her medley swim, Kinley then went on to take victory over Stoutt in the 50m backstroke.

Ben Kebbell and Ben Donaldson (both Douglas) shared the honours in the boys 11-years.  Birthday boy Kebbell (11 on the day) took the individual medley with Donaldson second, but the positions were reversed in the 50m backstroke.

Douglas swimmer, Duncan Wilson, was a triple winner in the boys' 12-years events of 50m butterfly and freestyle and 100m backstroke.

Other winners were Mark Copparelli (Douglas), 13-years 50m backstroke and 100m freestyle, Guy Davies (Southern) 13-years 100m breaststroke, and for 14-years, Andrew Corkill (Southern) 50m freestyle and Zak Keig (Douglas) 100m butterfly.
