Defective vehicles used on runway extension

by isleofman.com 19th November 2009

Vehicles used on a high profile capital project in the Isle of Man have been found to have defects, making them unroadworthy in the United Kingdom.

Two of eight vehicles contracted by Billown-based Colas for work on the airport runway extension had to be carried back to their Norwich depot on lowloaders, after police in Lancashire discovered problems with their brakes.

The vehicles were examined at Heysham port as they returned to the UK.

No further action will be taken against the owners, RJ Holbrook, as the vehicles didn't proceed onto the main road network, which no offence was committed.

Questions were asked in the House of Keys last week as to why a UK contractor was used for the prestigious project when Manx hauliers were available.
