Michael has a new commissioner.

In yesterday’s by-election retired professional Peter Hayes gained 187 votes to secure the vacant seat.

David Goldsmith, the only other candidate, polled 136 votes.

Mr Hayes will serve a two and half year term until the next local authority elections.

The election was called following the resignation of Sarah-Jane Bassett last month.
