Clampdown on rogue traders

by isleofman.com 17th November 2009

A tough new approach is on the way to tackle the scourge of rogue traders in the Isle of Man.

Police CID officers are to work with the Office of Fair Trading and the Work Permits section of the Department of Trade and Industry, to pool information and bring the culprits to book.

The OFT believes itinerant gangs from off-Island are targetting elderly and vulnerable people, offering to carry out work on their homes or gardens.

In some cases, large sums of money have been handed over for shoddy work.

Chief Inspector of Trading Standards at the OFT John Peet says some of the rogue gangs are very plausible (play audio file):

Police say the joined-up approach should result in more prosecutions.
