Jail for 'extremely serious' breach of trust

by isleofman.com 12th November 2009

A man who stole ?17,000 from his employer has been jailed by High Bailiff Michael Moyle.

Matthew Paul Burgess, of Ballure Road in Ramsey, admitted the theft, which was carried out over the course of a year.

The 27-year-old confessed when discrepancies were noticed in June by Mann Link Travel in Douglas.

He told police he couldn't afford to repay the cash, which he had spent on socialising.

The court heard Burgess made full and frank confession, telling officers he had taken the money between June 2008 and June 2009.

His advocate said the cash had been taken from companies rather than individuals, and although he realised the custody threshold had been reached, he urged a suspended sentence.

But Mr Moyle said it was an extremely serious breach of trust and a jail term was inevitable.

He gave Burgess the maximum credit for his early guilty plea, and imposed a seven month prison term.
