Sentence gives out 'strong message'

by isleofman.com 12th November 2009

The sentence handed to Trevor Baines shows the Isle of Man is a jurisdiction which will not tolerate white collar crime.

That's the message from Detective Chief Inspector John Mitchell, head of the Financial Crime Unit.

At the end of one of the longest and most complicated trials ever conducted in the Island's courts, Mr Baines was found guilty of money laundering.

He and wife Wendy Baines were also found guilty of false accounting.

Mr Baines was today sentenced to six years in prison and afterwards Inspector Mitchell said it was a message to the whole financial world.

Mr Baines received a sentence of six years whilst Mrs Baines was given a nine month term suspended for two years.
