DAFF savings could affect whole Island

Farmers and fishermen in the Isle of Man who are to lose government grants used to buy new equipment, say the wrong target has been chosen for savings.

On Friday, the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry closed two financial assistance schemes, saying they were desirable but not essential.

The move will save around ?300,000.

However, Manx Radio's farming correspondent John Kennaugh says both schemes were directed at modernising production and the department should have made savings elsewhere.

John says losing the grants could have an impact on the whole Island:
