Civil liberties concern - Sunday Opinion debate

by isleofman.com 8th November 2009

An MLC has strongly criticised a draft bill, parts of which, he believes, would erode civil liberties if they became law.

On Manx Radio's Sunday Opinion, David Callister claimed many of the proposals in the Criminal Justice (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill were unnecessary.

However, Deputy Chief Constable Gary Roberts insisted any new powers would not be abused, and said protecting residents of the Island was of paramount importance.

These are extracts of what they said on the programme, with Mr Callister speaking first (play audio file):

The bill proposes amending 26 existing pieces of legislation, which the Department of Home Affairs says will modernise and enhance the Isle of Man's criminal justice system.
