End of season brought forward

The summer season in Douglas will be shortened by two weeks in 2010, as the borough council knuckles down to saving money in the new economic era.

The Public Works Committee has worked out that a saving of ?5,500 can be made, if the decorative lighting, flags and banners on the promenade are taken down for the winter a fortnight early.

They will be removed in the middle of October, although the lights in Summer Hill Glen could stay on a little longer.

Committee chairman Ritchie McNicholl says there's a strong economic argument for taking the action, but it's also a sign that times have changed:
