Many charities in the Isle of Man are bracing themselves for a sustained period of difficulty.
That's the belief of the chairman of the Manx Foundation for the Physically Disabled, after it announced it is to sell two houses to ensure its survival.
Officials at the charity say without the money from the sale of the properties in Farmhill, Douglas, it would run out of cash by next June, leaving more than 100 disabled people without essential social care services.
In addition, 17 staff would lose their jobs.
The economic downturn, low interest rates and a lack of legacies have been cited as major factors in the decision.
Chairman David Cooke says the Foundation has been using savings for some time and he is concerned for the future of many charities (play audio file):
The Manx Foundation will be working with the DHSS to find the two tenants alternative accommodation.
