People are being reminded that today (5th November) is the last day it is permitted to sell fireworks under Manx law, although this year the period when fireworks can be let off has been changed to include two weekends.
Under an Order approved by Tynwald last month, the Bonfire Night period when it is permitted to set off fireworks without notifying the Department
of Home Affairs runs from 30th October to 11.59pm on Sunday 8th November 2009.
However, private party organisers should be aware that fireworks must be purchased by 5th November as retailers are not permitted to sell fireworks after this date.
The Fire Service urges care around fireworks and bonfires and advises people to go to an organised Bonfire Night event.
However, if you are having a private bonfire party, there are some crucial safety points which should be observed, including the safe storage of sparklers and fireworks; not using out of date fireworks; not giving sparklers to the under fives and ensuring the person responsible for fireworks does not consume alcohol.
Also, anyone having a bonfire in their garden should ensure it’s at least 18 metres away from any buildings and use domestic firelighters if necessary to light it, not paraffin or petrol.
