Young Endeavour Rewarded by Manx Gas

by isleofman.com 4th November 2009

Young Thomas Baggaley has won this year's Alfie Gilmour Award for Endeavour, which is sponsored by Manx Gas.

The award, which was named in honour of a longstanding employee of Manx Gas, is given annually to a pupil of Kewaigue School who is considered by his or her teachers to have shown outstanding all-round achievement.

Thomas, 11, was announced as the 2009 winner at the school’s end of year assembly in July.

To mark his achievement, Thomas was presented with gift vouchers and a specially crafted trophy during a short presentation at Manx Gas' headquarters on South Quay, Douglas this afternoon (4th November).

Thomas was joined at the presentation by last year's award winner, Mike Mullin, who was given a replica trophy to keep.

Manx Gas arranged for the introduction of this award, now in its seventh year, to recognise endeavour among the pupils at Kewaigue School in memory of Douglas Gas employee Alfie Gilmour, who himself had attended Kewaigue school.

Gary Cregeen, Sales and Marketing Manager of Manx Gas, said, "Alfie Gilmour worked for Douglas Gas for a number of years and throughout his time with us he demonstrated commitment to the team and the company.

"This award provides Manx Gas with an opportunity to encourage endeavour among future generations of Kewaigue School."

Mr Cregeen went on to praise the community spirit and friendliness of the school, which has just over 100 pupils.

Thomas, who is now in his first term at Ballakermeen High School, won praise for his fundraising efforts: by organising a sponsored swim and other events, he was instrumental in raising ?1,000 for the school to purchase a new astropitch.

Mark Stevens, Head Teacher of Kewaigue School, comments, "The Alfie Gilmour Award is presented to one student each year who the teachers believe has, above all others, strived to do the best for themselves, their class and the school.

"Throughout his time at Kewaigue School, Thomas Baggaley demonstrated determination to never give up, a willingness to help others and continually tried hard to achieve his best.

"We would like to wish Thomas and Mike the best of luck in their secondary education and to extend our thanks once again to Manx Gas for their continued support."
