'Stadium pledge must be honoured' - Quayle

The minister for tourism and leisure says the Isle of Man must honour its pledge to redevelop the Bowl in Douglas in time for the Commonwealth Youth Games.

Martyn Quayle says games officials have made it clear they want the stadium as a centrepiece for the 2011 event, as a grand sports and spectator facility.

His comments come after Douglas Council leader David Christian said, in his view, the money would be better spent elsewhere, especially as local authorities have been told to make savings, in the wake of the recent 'VAT bombshell'.

The council is due to fund around half the ?3.3 million cost of the scheme and the minister says dropping it now would let-down the thousands of visitors and competitors due to visit the Island.

Mr Quayle says a vital opportunity to provide a top class legacy for the Island could be lost:
