Civil service redundancies would hit economy

Government workers who are worried about jobs, pay and pensions can be assured of strong support from their union.

So says the United Kingdom national president of Prospect Catherine Donaldson, who last night addressed the AGM of the Government Officers Association in Douglas.

Ms Donaldson heard from many civil servants worried about job security after the loss of almost 25 per cent of government revenues because of changes to the VAT sharing agreement with the United Kingdom.

She says Prospect is grappling with similar challenges in the UK, and will do all it can to help public sector staff here.

Ms Donaldson says, as the government is the Island's biggest employer, any redundancies will hit the economy hard:
