Calls to scrap the redevelopment of the Bowl in Douglas in time for the Commonwealth Youth Games in 2011, have been met with dismay by the minister for tourism and leisure.
Martyn Quayle says the stadium is seen as by games organisers as essential for a succesful event, as it would host the opening ceremony and provide the biggest spectator facilities.
At the weekend, Douglas Council leader David Christian said, in his personal view, the authority may not be able to afford the ?1.5 million it has pledged to the project.
Mr Quayle says a redeveloped Bowl would be a sporting centrepiece for large numbers of visitors:
