QE2's Head of English faces internet sex charges

by isleofman.com 2nd November 2009

The head of QE2 High School’s English department has been arrested on suspicion of attempting to engage in sexual activity in the presence of a child.

He was arrested last Wednesday, although police have only just released details.

James John Barefield, of Kirk Michael, was arrested on behalf of the Metropolitan Police in connection with alleged internet offences.

The 31-year-old was taken to the UK by Manx officers and appeared at the City of Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Friday morning.

Mr Barefield was arrested by the Manx force under a section of UK law allowing British citizens to be tried in the UK for sexual offences committed elsewhere.

He faces two counts of attempting to engage in sexual activity in the presence of a child, and was bailed on condition he doesn’t return to the Island.

He will next appear at Southwark Crown Court on 27th November.

The Department of Education has been notified of his arrest and suspended the teacher during the criminal proceedings.

Police say both the school and department are assisting the investigation and offering support to students and staff returning from half term.
