'Scrap Bowl scheme' says council leader

by isleofman.com 2nd November 2009

The leader of Douglas Borough Council believes plans to redevelop the Bowl at a cost of ?3.3 million should be scrapped.

In the light of the massive budget shortfall the Island is facing following the United Kingdom Government's decision to review the VAT revenue sharing agreement, David Christian says such expenditure can no longer be justified.

The intention has been to create a centre piece for the Commonwealth Youth Games, which the Island will be hosting in 2011.

But, on Manx Radio's Sunday Opinion, Councillor Christian said everybody involved had to face facts (play audio file):

Councillor Christian says his view is a personal one at the moment, but he will be recommending the borough council's withdrawal from the scheme, to which it has been committed to contribute over ?1.5 million.
