Bowl scheme under threat - reaction

by isleofman.com 2nd November 2009

One of the key figures behind the Island's successful bid to host the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games says he is disappointed by Douglas Councillor David Christian's call for the redevelopment of the Bowl to be scrapped.

Geoff Karran says a lot of work has gone into the ?3.3 million scheme, and Tourism and Leisure Minister Martyn Quayle is due to seek Tynwald's approval for the government's contribution before the end of the year.

Mr Karran says, as the owner of the Bowl, Douglas Borough Council is well aware that something has to be done to preserve the facility for any sort of use.

He says with the cost split 50-50, between the council and government, the 2011 games presented an opportunity for the creation of top class facility (play audio file):

Councillor Christian says the expenditure can no longer be justified, since the United Kingdom Government's decision to dramatically reduce the Isle of Man's revenue from VAT.
