Invention takes strain out of Hop tu Naa!

by isleofman.com 26th October 2009

Hop tu Naa will be a little easier for some children in the Isle of Man this year.

Sprained wrists and bent teaspoons could be a thing of the past, now a machine has been devised for carving out traditional turnip lanterns.

Robinson's of Ballapaddag has created what it's calling the 'world's first turnip excavator', a large upright drill which makes short work of hollowing out your chosen vegetable.

Managing director John Horsthuis says it's a unique machine for a unique job (play audio file):

Manx National Heritage is staging its traditional Hop tu Naa celebration at the National Folk Museum at Cregneash this Saturday, October 31, from 10am.
