'Inner life' helped hostage survive

by isleofman.com 26th October 2009

Former Middle East hostage Terry Waite has been telling Manx Radio how his love of literature helped him survive five years chained up in a small cell in Beirut.

During his ordeal, the first four years of which were in solitary confinement, he developed an 'inner life', which saw him write his book on the experience, 'Taken on Trust', in his head.

Mr Waite, who visited the Isle of Man at the weekend, says he did it with no books or paper, or contact with the outside world, and not knowing if he would still be alive from one day to the next (play audio file):

Terry Waite was the guest of honour at Friday night's Trafalgar Ball, at the Hilton Hotel.
