Three Legged Racers Smash World Record

by isleofman.com 22nd October 2009

People from all over the Island gathered at Noble's Park last Sunday (18th October) to witness the record for the world’s largest three legged race being smashed at an event organised by Barclays Wealth.

The world record attempt was the brainchild of Damian Bird and co-ordinated by Barclays Wealth staff, who worked hard to ensure a successful event.

Damian organised the event with his Barclays Wealth colleagues Ian Pilley and Kerrie McCauley, who campaigned tirelessly to sign up as many people as possible for the event.

On the day, a mighty 468 pairs ran in the race which broke the existing record of 346 by 120 pairs.  Hundreds more people turned up on the day to help cheer on the racers and donate sponsorship money.

Each couple contributed a fee to enter the race and many collected extra sponsorship from friends and family.

All of the proceeds from the race will be going to the Barclays Wealth Charity of the Year, Wish Upon a Dream. It is expected that around ?40,000 will be raised for the local charity which helps make the dreams of sick and terminally ill children on the Island come true.

The race was run over a 205 metre course and each couple was counted as they crossed the start and finish line to comply with Guinness World Records requirements. It is expected that Guinness will ratify the record in the next few weeks.

Damian said, "I would like to personally thank everybody who came out on the day to race and support us in our world record breaking three legged race.

"This has been a major challenge to organise and all of the staff at Barclays Wealth are delighted to have been able to help raise so much money for our charity of the year.

"There was a real party atmosphere at Noble’s Park on Sunday with many people racing in fancy dress and children’s entertainment running all afternoon. ’

Lesley Turnbull from Wish Upon a Dream said, "We had great fun on the day and we are all delighted that the world record was broken.

"It was truly an honour for Wish Upon a Dream to be chosen as the charity to benefit from this massive fund raising event and this is the largest donation we have ever received.

"This money will really make a huge difference to the lives of sick and terminally ill children on the Island by making some of their dreams come true."
