Important statement on VAT situation

by isleofman.com 20th October 2009

Members of Tynwald are getting down to business today, with the first sitting of the court since the summer recess.

It's set to be dominated by the new threat over VAT, and how much the Island gets out of the joint agreement with the United Kingdom.

Chief Minister Tony Brown is due to make a statement to the court after Tynwald members were briefed on the subject last week.

He is expected to provide more details about what the UK told Treasury Minister Allan Bell during a recent meeting in London.

Jason Roberts (text, below, from attached audio file):

The VAT agreement says how much both we and the UK get each year out of a common pot of money we both pay into.

It's believed the UK, which is strapped for cash following the worldwide banking crisis, has asked for a larger proportion of the money.

The cash accounts for about half the Manx government's annual ?300 million income, and any reduction would mean the government would have to find money from elsewhere.

It's thought Mr Brown's statement to the court could be made before questions today.

The whole of the sitting will be broadcast live on Manx Radio's AM 1368 frequency, from 10.30am.
