Charlotte and Philip in a League of Their Own

by isleofman.com 7th October 2009

Report by Shirley Coop

The first of the season’s Swagelok Swimming League took place at the NSC recently, with the swim of the meet coming from 13 year old Charlotte Atkinson in the very first event, the ladies 200m freestyle.

Her winning time of 2 min 15.26 was over three seconds clear of her nearest rival, and some ten seconds faster than she has ever swam the event before.

The Douglas girl was also a clear winner in the 13 years 200m individual medley, with a time of 2 min 37.28.

Philip Harrison, also for Douglas, had the most wins of the evening, with victories in all three open events, 50m backstroke, 100m breaststroke and 200m freestyle, and the 15 and over 100m backstroke.

He had to settle for joint 3rd in the 15 and over 50m butterfly, with Southern’s Andrew Cowley and Andrew Isaac (Douglas) just beating him and Tom Kelly recording exactly the same time.

The 9 year olds age group saw some swimmers competing for the first time, but the winner of the boys 25m breaststroke, Southern’s Thomas Weatherill, had swam the event before and managed to knock a massive 8 seconds of his previous time with 19.64 – a very impressive swim.

Joshua Corteen (Ramseian) won the other event in this age group, the 50m freestyle, with his team mate James Cowin coming second in both races.

The same clubs were victorious in the corresponding girls events, with Catreena Crowe taking the breaststroke for the northern club and Ciara Danes the freestyle for Southern.

Douglas swimmer, Cara Bregazzi was runner up in both.  Jamie Corlett, for Ramseian, took both the 25m backstroke and 50m breaststroke in the boys 10 years events.

In the girls' races Alex Whitfield, also for Ramseian, took the breaststroke, but had to settle for 2nd behind Douglas’s Ciara Cassidy in the backstroke.

Douglas swimmers, Amy Kinley and Ben Kebbell swept the boards in the 11 years events, both winning the 50m freestyle and the 100m butterfly.

The boys' freestyle was one of the closest races of the evening with the top three finishers all within less than a second.

Duncan Wilson took the 50m breaststroke, 100m freestyle and 100m butterfly for 12 years old boys, but had to share the honours with Southerns’ Callan Kelly-Bunyan in the shorter event.

Stephanie Brew and Katie Callow, both swimming for the northern club, shared the top two places in the girls’ races, with Stephanie winning the breaststroke and butterfly, and Katie the Freestyle.

Guy Davies, for Southern, took the 13 years 200m individual medley whilst his team mates Kevin Kelly and Andrew Corkill each had a win in the 14 years races.

Kelly in the 50m butterfly and Corkill the 100m backstroke.  The corresponding girls’ events went to Samantha Shimmin for Douglas and Sarah Breed for Southern.

Catherine Breed (Southern) was a double winner in the 15 years plus 50m butterfly and 100m backstroke, to go with her 2 second places in the open 200m freestyle and 50m backstroke.

Island Games swimmer, Poppy Evans, for Ramseian, won her speciality event, the open 100m breaststroke, with 13 year old Laura Kinley taking an excellent 2nd place.

The other winner in the ladies open events was another 13 year old, Allana Kelly, who took victory in the 50m backstroke, from over 40 competitors.
