Island's prison is overused - advocate

by isleofman.com 6th October 2009

A local advocate says the number of prison remands for defendants awaiting trial in the Isle of Man is 'shocking', and is calling for the figure to be cut.

John Wright says some people are in custody for offences which wouldn't get them remanded elsewhere, and is suggesting more use should be made of facilities such as bail hostels.

Mr Wright also believes too many cases end with short prison terms, when rehabilitation would be more appropriate (play audio file):

John Wright was speaking to Stuart Peters on Talking Heads.
