Benefit cheat avoids custody

A Douglas man who falsely claimed more than ?6,300 in benefits has been given a suspended jail term.

Thirty-eight-year-old Norman Daniel Alexander made six false statements to obtain jobseekers allowance.

The court heard Alexander failed to inform the DHSS he was working, and was overpaid a total of ?6,379.

High Bailiff Michael Moyle was told he spent the money on gambling and drinking.

Mr Moyle fined Alexander ?1,500 and imposed a two year supervision order.

He also ordered him to repay the money and attend a programme for his alcohol and gambling habits.
