Trip to Labour conference 'a useful exercise'

by isleofman.com 30th September 2009

Agriculture Minister Phil Gawne says this week's Labour Party conference is the ideal time to talk to the United Kingdom government about the Isle of Man.

Mr Gawne and Treasury Minister Allan Bell are at the gathering in Brighton on a mission to tell MPs more about the Island and combat any misunderstandings or misapprehensions.

The two Manx politicians have been meeting Labour party members and answering questions.

Mr Gawne says it's well worth representing the Island there and told Manx Radio:

"I think the Isle of Man government needs to be represented at the party conferences, primarily because there is so much misunderstanding of what is going on, and what isn't going on, in the Isle of Man.

"I've spoken to several MPs already and it's fair to say that by the time we had finished our conversations they were considerably better educated about what is happening in the Isle of Man than they were before we started.

"So I think it's a really helpful and useful exercise."
