Drugs in jail 'more serious than outside'

by isleofman.com 28th September 2009

A man who hid drugs in his underwear while being searched in the Island's prison last year has been jailed for 30 months by Deemster Doyle.

John Alan Johnson, whose address was given as care of the prison, is currently serving a seven and a half year sentence imposed in February 2008.

Deemster Doyle told Johnson, who was charged with possession with intent to supply and possession, that having drugs inside a prison was a far more serious matter than having them outside.

The court heard the drugs, diazepam and heroin, were to be given to someone inside who had made threats regarding the safety of the defendant's mother.

Deemster Doyle said the threats were unsubstantiated and he only had Johnson's word they had been made. There was also very little mitigation.

Johnson's advocate urged the court to be as lenient as possible with any sentence so his client 'could have some light at the end of the tunnel'.

Deemster Doyle ordered that the 30 months should follow on after the term of seven and a half years has been completed.
