Ramsey Commissioners are to be the first local authority on the Island to install outdoor exercise equipment for adults.
The Commission has placed an order for a range of units through specialist suppliers Wicksteed Leisure expressly designed for young people (minimum age 12) and adults which will be installed in Mooragh Park.
The Commissioners’ decision builds on the success of its 'walk and talk' programme in the Park and complements the Department of Health and Social Security’s recent draft consultation paper on a physical activity framework for the Isle of Man.
Provision for the ?30,000 supply and installation cost was made in the Commission’s 2009-2010 budget.
Ramsey Town Commissioners’ chairman Sylvia Beattie said the equipment was low-maintenance, had strong vandal-resistant properties and received support from the DHSS occupational therapist service and Manx Sport and Recreation.
She commented, "The Mooragh Park is at the very heart of the town and is already the setting for a wide variety of outdoor activities, from tennis to canoeing, bowls to BMX racing.
"Installing outdoor exercise equipment is a logical extension of the Commission’s commitment to developing Mooragh Park as an outdoor space that will play a key role in encouraging healthy lifestyles and bring both families and generations together."
