Rotary Visitors from Sri Lanka

by isleofman.com 23rd September 2009

Selected from more than 200 applicants, the four members of the team were accompanied by the group leader Dr Suresh Britto, who is a member of the Rotary Club of Colombo.

Each year, the Rotary Group Study Exchange programme arranges for groups of students to spend several weeks experiencing their own discipline in another country.

Previously, the Isle of Man has had medical specialists from India, fire fighters from Chicago and IT specialists from Argentina visit under the scheme.

This group, who are in the UK for a month, have spent five days in the Isle of Man.

During their time here, the members visited Hospice, Manx Radio, the Energy from Waste Plant, the MEA, and DOLGE's Mapping Department to meet fellow workers and learn how we operate in the Isle of Man.

Cultural visits included an electric tram ride; visits to the Laxey Wheel, Mines Museum and the House of Manannan, and a trip to see the Space Capsule at King William’s College.

On Monday evening, the visiting team gave a presentation to more than 70 Rotarians attending the regular weekly meeting of the Rotary Club of Onchan at The Max Restaurant.

This very informative audio visual presentation highlighted the differences between life on our Island and that of Sri Lanka.

Mr Noel Cringle, President of Tynwald, gave the group a very informative tour of the Tynwald building explaining the political and parliamentary systems of the Isle of Man.

The visit to the Isle of Man was coordinated by Rotarian George Huntley, who thanked all the Island business people who had given up their time this week to meet with the various team members.
