Doctors at a specialist unit for head injuries at a hospital in Florence are due to decide this morning on the next course of action in the treatment of Manx professional cyclist Jonny Bellis.
The 21-year-old suffered bruising to his brain and fractures to his skull in a scooter accident near the British cyling team's training base at Quarrata in Tuscany on Friday.
He has been in a deep, induced coma as doctors have concentrated on reducing pressure in his skull, and was described as 'stable' by his father, John, when Manx Radio spoke to him last night.
Mr Bellis senior had been to see his son, and said the pressure had remained stable since Jonny's admittance to the Florence hospital.
He said he was unconscious, but breathing, when he arrived there, but had since been on a ventilator as part of the treatment.
Mr Bellis said he and his wife, Lynda, were only allowed to see their son for a total of an hour each day, with one relative at a time in the ITU.
They hoped more members of the family would be travelling to Italy later in the week, and said the numerous messages of support they had received from the Isle of Man and elsewhere were greatly appreciated.
Mr Bellis said Jonny had been lucky in that a friend had been following him when he crashed, and called for the emergency services when he saw him at the side of the road.
He was first taken to a local hospital, but was quickly moved on to the specialist unit.
Soon after he was admitted a valve was fitted to relieve the pressure in his skull.
