Man rescued from sea - Mandate interview

Senior police figures are paying tribute to an officer who rescued a man from the sea in Douglas at the weekend.

Constable David Schumacher jumped into the water at Loch Promenade at 3.20am on Sunday, when a man appeared to be in serious difficulty.

Members of the public raised the alarm and other emergency services were called, but with the situation perilous and little time to spare, Constable Schumacher decided he would swim out to rescue the man himself.

He was 60 metres from the shore and in deep water.

Superintendent Paul Cubbon has praised the officer, saying he may have averted a tragedy:
