Go Down Mexico Way With Los Pacaminos

by isleofman.com 18th September 2009

Feeling blue at the thought of the long Manx winter ahead? Want something to liven up a dark November evening?  Then Los Pacaminos are just the ticket for you!

This rather unusual band first got together in London in 1993 when a group of crack musicians decided to share their passion for border, Tex-Mex and Americana music, and beat the winter blues into the bargain.

They began life as a practice band which fitted in around other musical commitments but word got around, as word does, and soon the band started playing gigs in their own right.

At least one member of this highly respected group will be very familiar to music lovers, as Los Pacaminos is fronted by one of the UK’s finest and best loved vocalists - Paul Young.

Paul says that Los Pacaminos “started out just for fun, playing simply for the pleasure of it, and it just took off from there.

"What’s really nice is that everyone else in the band can sing too, and they do, all in their own very different styles.  It’s real bar-room stuff, foot stompers, not too many slow songs – a real party atmosphere!”

Tex-Mex music lies somewhere between the Mariachi and Norteno styles of Mexico and the country/blues sounds of South-Western America.

The band is influenced by their love of Ry Cooder, Flaco Jiminez, The Texas Tornadoes and Los Lobos and their set includes a mixture of originals and covers such as Wooly Bully, La Bamba and sometimes, if enough tequila is flowing, Speedy Gonzales.

Paul is not the only luminary in this seven piece band, which consists of some of the best musicians in the business.

The full line-up is Drew Barfield (guitar/vocals), Melvyn Duffy (pedal steel), Steve Greetham (bass/vocals), Matt Irving(keyboards/accordion/vocals), Jamie Moses (guitar/vocals) and Mark Pinder (drums/percussion).

Between them, they’ve worked with a staggering number of great artists and bands and are united by all having played with Paul Young through the last two decades.

Their friendships stretch back equally as far and it’s these long-term connections which underpin the very special atmosphere generated at a Los Pacaminos show.

Los Pacaminos will play the Gaiety Theatre on Saturday 28th November, supported by local guitar duo Strengyn.

Tickets priced ?18-?20 are on sale from Friday 18th September in person from the Welcome Centre and The Villa Marina Box Office in Douglas, by calling the hotline (01624 600555) or booking online at www.villagaiety.com
