There are just 45 dairy farmers left in the Isle of Man, 25 fewer than four years ago.
President of the National Farmers Union Howard Quayle says the industry on the Island is in the same parlous state as in the United Kingdom.
And he can understand why many local farmers have decided to quit.
He told Manx Radio:
"If you are a business person and it is costing you between 27 to 30 pence per litre to produce milk and you are only being paid 24p at the moment for that litre of milk, then you have to understand why our dairy farmers are just saying 'enough's enough'.
"We just have those who are really dedicated to the job, the eternal optimists, that are hanging in there, hoping the job is going to improve."
