Home Affairs Minister Adrian Earnshaw is sure life in the Island's prison at Jurby isn't too easy.
On Manx Radio'sTalking Heads programme, he said it was important inmates didn't suffer under a grim, cruel regime.
But, replying to those who claimed the new jail, with its flatscreen TVs, a gym and other facilities, was more like a hotel, he said it was vital for the facility to meet international standards.
Mr Earnshaw also said an important part of the job of the prison was rehabilitation:
