Plastic Bag Free - can you be?

by isleofman.com 3rd September 2009

Are you one of the millions of people who carry your shopping home in the free plastic bags supplied by the supermarket?

If so, then you should put Saturday, September 12 in your diary.

The Isle of Man will be joining in the first 'International Plastic Bag Free Day' when shoppers everywhere will be encouraged to refuse plastic bags and take a re-useable bag instead.

The initiative has been co-ordinated by the Marine Conservation Society and is being supported by local group Zero Waste Mann, which runs the Green Centre based opposite the Strand Shopping Centre in Douglas.

Chairman Andrew Jessopp says it's estimated the Island imports around five million bags a year which causes real problems for marine life when they end up in the sea.

He says they're keen to reduce that number and are taking the opportunity to try and wean people off their plastic bag habit.
