McIlvenna wins Junior MGP

by isleofman.com 2nd September 2009

Irishman Steve McIlvenna claimed an emotional victory in today's Junior Manx Grand Prix race.

There was an electrifying start as local rider Ryan Kneen, brother of last year's winner, Dan Kneen set a blazing pace from tenth place on the grid, opening an eight second lead over McILvenna by the end of the first lap.

Worsening problems with his steering damper slowed Kneen though and allowed McILvenna to consolidate a 5.9 second lead.

The win meant a lot to McILvenna as he rode a bike previously owned by rising Irish roadrace star Andrew Neil, who was tragically killed at the Walderstown Road Races in July.

He dedicated it to Andrew and also to Mark Young who died at the Northwest 200 in May and was clearly delighted with the win as he spoke to Chris Kinley afterwards:
