A local woman says she's bringing a civil case against Boots Opticians because she wants to see regulations in the industry tightened.
Marion Blackburn's son David had numerous problems when he was given the wrong prescription for his glasses at the Douglas branch almost four years ago.
A General Optical Council committee earlier this year heard - among other things - the manager of the shop wasn't actually qualified to dispense to under-16s at the time.
The GOC fined Boots Opticians ?30,000 for its lack of supervision of the manager, saying it was a move to protect the public.
Marion Blackburn says some regulations have been changed already, but she wants more done to ensure something like this doesn't happen again: (play audio clip)
A statement from a Boots Opticians spokesperson says, "We take our duty of care to our patients very seriously and we have reviewed our procedures carefully in line with the findings in this isolated case.
"It is important to Boots Opticians Ltd that we continue to provide the high quality of care that our patients expect and that our profession should deliver and will continue to work with the optical professional bodies to further clarify the standards for supervision."
