Manx ship in Dutch collision

by isleofman.com 1st September 2009

Another Manx-registered ship has been involved in a collision at sea.

The 12,000-ton Nirint Pride flying the Manx flag collided with the 30,000-ton container ship MSC Nikita.

The incident happened in 23 miles west of the Hook of Holland at around 10.40pm on Saturday night and the 25 crew on board the Nikita were forced to abandon ship when it began sinking.

The Nirint Pride’s bows were damaged when fire broke out aboard her but her 17 crew managed to control the blaze.

The Nirint Pride is a container ship built in 2000 and is owned by Rotterdam-based Nirint Shipping.

Her crew are reported to be Russians and the vessel was said to be travelling from Rotterdam to Bilbao when the incident happened in the westerly bound lane of a traffic separation scheme.

There are no reports of any injuries among either crew.

It’s the latest collision to involve a Manx vessel – last month the Isle of Man registered Ostende Max was damaged in an incident in the Malacca Straits which left a number of crewmen on board the other vessel dead.
