Paul Costain, from Moorhouse Farm, Colby, has bagged a Samsung Rugged phone from Manx Telecom after winning the company's 'Guess the Name of the Sheep' competition at the recent Royal Manx Show, where Telecom teamed up with Age Concern to promote digital inclusion amongst the Over 50s.
The Show itself proved to be a huge success for Manx Telecom with the company reporting an unprecedented numbers of visitors to the stand: “It’s been one of the best Royal Manx Shows for many years,” said Marcomms Manager Voirrey Barron.
“The fine weather always makes such a difference but the level of interest in digital inclusion amongst the over 50s was a real eye opener.”
The sheep in question was Hector, one of the rare Manx Loughton breed and the pride and joy of owner Judith Walker, who is also Manx Telecom’s Human Resources Manager.
“This new Rugged phone couldn’t have come along at a better time, as my old Nokia was held together with sellotape,” Paul confessed as he tended to his flock at the Mart.
Around £200 was raised from the Prize Draw promotion with all proceeds going to Age Concern Isle of Man.
The charity operates five Lifelong Learning Centres promoting digital inclusion for the over-50s and Manager Mike Justice felt that linking up with Manx Telecom for the two day Show had been a big boost for the organisation.
“We raised awareness about our centres and the opportunities we offer older people to learn more about computers. Skype, word-processing, desktop publishing and social networking, for example,” he said.
“We are especially grateful to Manx Telecom for providing us space in their exhibition tent and, of course, to Hector.”
