Community service for drink-driver caught with drugs

by isleofman.com 26th August 2009

A man who admitted failing to leave licensed premises when asked, drink driving and possessing cannabis has been ordered to do 200 hours community service.

Twenty-nine-year-old Jan Broza of Empress Drive in Douglas appeared before Deputy High Bailiff Alastair Montgomery for sentencing.

Justin Bullars, prosecuting, said the charges related to two different incidents in Douglas this summer.

In the first, on May 16, he’d refused to leave Colours nightclub after door staff were alerted to his behaviour.

The court heard staff at Colours asked him to leave, but Broza became aggressive and abusive and staff had to detain him until police arrived.

He was so aggressive officers put him straight into a cell – he later told them he couldn’t remember anything about the evening because he’d drunk ten pints of lager.

At 2.40am on June 20, he was arrested outside Guys and Dolls after witnesses saw him staggering around a van he’d driven from Victoria Street.

At police headquarters he was searched and officers found 1.3 grammes of cannabis resin. He also gave a blood alcohol reading of 188.

Mr Montgomery banned him from driving for two and a half years, and ordered him to pay costs of ?130.
