More flak for Lib Dem peer

by isleofman.com 24th August 2009

A Liberal Democrat peer has come in for more flak from the Isle of Man.

Lord Wallace of Saltair upset locals two weeks ago when he said the Island’s autonomy should be examined as the House of Commons Justice Commission assesses Britain's relationship with the Crown Dependencies.

After receiving criticism, the Liberal Vannin Party has now also condemned the remarks.

Vice-Chairman Roy Redmayne says he’s saddened by the comments and shows Lord Wallace clearly has no knowledge of the Isle of Man and its unique place in the history of the British Isles or the difference between the crown and the United Kingdom government.

He says it also highlights repeated concerns raised by party leader Peter Karran over the legislative changes needed to deal with Royal Assent which, the party believes, should be on the advice of the Manx government.

Mr Redmayne hopes the comments will highlight the need to further strengthen the Manx nation’s constitutional armour and the party will relay its concerns to Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg.
