Sold! Antiques and Automobiles Go Under the Hammer

by isleofman.com 11th August 2009

Potter and Bailey Auctions, who hold regular sales of antiques and collectables, are anticipating a good deal of public interest in their forthcoming auctions in August, October and November/December.

Although Potter and Bailey advertise in the UK, they are a genuinely local auction house, with the vast majority of lots originating from within the Island.

The company was established when Neil Potter and John Bailey decided to combine their knowledge and expertise. John specialises in automobilia and metalware, while Neil has been in the antiques business for over fifteen years.

Having worked for a number of auction houses in the UK, and acted as a private buyer for Bonham's and Christie's, Neil moved to the Isle of Man four years ago.

"We see a massive response from the public to our auctions," says Neil.

"We've already accumulated more than enough items for our next sale, which means we'll be holding them over for the auction in October."

"Most of our lots are locally sourced and come from both private vendors and house clearances. People appreciate the fact that most of the items will not have been seen before; they haven't been previously circulated through dealers.

"Customers also like the fact that we believe in a 'back to basics' policy: we only charge ten per cent to buyers and sellers; don't charge at all if your item doesn't sell; and don't place VAT or other fees on lots".

The next auction, featuring over 300 lots, takes place this Friday (14th August) in the Sanderson suite of the Claremont Hotel.

Viewing starts at 9am and continues all day until the auction begins at 6pm. Amongst the lots will be coins and banknotes, jewellery, decorative homeware, books, postcards and many more unusual and valuable pieces dating from the 18th, 19th and 20th Centuries.

After this date, the next antiques auction will take place at the beginning of October and be notable as the first outing for Potter and Bailey's live internet bidding facility.

A Must for Serious Motorholics

Meanwhile, Potter and Bailey's specialist TT and Automobilia sale, set to take place in November/December, is already causing a stir.

"We're calling on people to bring forward all automobilia dating thirty years or older and TT souvenirs dating as recently as the '90s.

"We've already had a great response and will be unveiling some fascinating items, so it's going to be a very enjoyable auction indeed," says Neil.

While refusing to be drawn on the details, Neil confirms that one of the lots, an iconic vintage car, once appeared in a much-loved movie!

With sales of this calibre, it's no wonder that Potter and Bailey are making a name for themselves.

However, as Neil explains, it's a name they've earned for the right reasons: "The response and support we have had so far has been astounding.

"We think this is because we are friendly and approachable and we run our auctions with basic values in mind: value, honesty and fun".
