Age Concern Launches 'D Day' Drive

by isleofman.com 7th August 2009

Age Concern Isle of Man is following in the formidable footsteps of no-nonsense retail guru Mary Portas.

The BBC TV presenter's recent programme, Mary, Queen of Charity Shops, which aimed to raise the image and stock of charity shops, has inspired Age Concern in the Isle of Man to launch its D Day initiative.

Chief executive Penny Creighton MBE explained, "The 'D' stands for donation. We’re looking to partner with companies Island-wide and encourage their employees to donate one quality item, such as glass or chinaware, artwork or clothing; after all, one person’s fashion faux pas can be another person’s style statement.

"On this occasion, we’re asking people to dig deep, not into their pockets but into their wardrobes and cupboards.

"Fashionistas in the know have come to recognise the benefits of charity-shop chic.

"It’s not about bagging a bargain cardigan; it’s about supporting ethical rather than throwaway fashion.

"The volunteers in our two shops – one in Ramsey, the other in Port Erin – work tirelessly year round and the revenue they generate makes a very real difference to our income, demands on which are growing by the month, so much so we plan to open a new shop in Douglas very soon.

"We’ll be happy to arrange collection of donated items – just call us on 613044.

"Through our D Day initiative, we’re hoping to redefine the public’s perception of charity outlets, boost stock levels, raise funds and perhaps introduce a little 'bling and buy' to our shops."

Age Concern Isle of Man shops are at 64 Parliament Street, Ramsey (call 815399) and 37 Station Road, Port Erin (call 835412).

The first two organisations to join ‘the D-Day landings’ were PDMS and the IFG Group.
