Police praise young victim of sex offender

by isleofman.com 28th July 2009

Police say the man sentenced to 26 months in jail yesterday for indecently assaulting a child, had been employed at the school in the Island where he commited the offences for two years.

Forty-eight year-old Donald Andrew Warren from Ballaugh was found guilty on two counts of indecent assault earlier this month.

His victim, a young boy, was aged between six and eight years old.

Officers involved in the case today released a statement on the sentence handed to Warren.

Marian Kenny reports (text, below, from attached audio file):

The offences were carried out between 2006 and 2008 when Donald Warren was employed as a primary school ancillary worker. The name of the school is not being released.

He was sentenced to 26 months imprisonment and placed on the sex offenders register for ten years.

The officer in charge of the investigation, Constable Charlotte Stringer, says she believes Warren purposely sought employment where he would have access to children.

He had been employed at the school for several years and had access to children in his previous employment.

But she says he had no previous convicitions and had not come to police attention before his arrest in February 2008.

Constable Stringer describes the boy as extremely brave to come forward.

The family of the child have thanked police and Victim Support for their help during the case and say they are glad justice has been done.
