Martin wins sensational Southern 100

by isleofman.com 16th July 2009

Guy Martin is the Southern 100 Solo Champion and father and son crew Ian and Carl Bell have claimed the Sidecar title after a incredible last day of racing at Billown.

Throughout the meeting, nine races were decided by winning margins of less than a second.

The Sidecar Championship event was red-flagged at the start of the last lap when Steven Coombes and Paul Knapton were involved in an incident at Ballakaighan.

Both were perfectly ok and walked away from the scene.

Ian and Carl Bell were declared the winners.

The Solo Race saw a red hot battle from start to finish between four riders, namely Ryan Farquhar, Conor Cummins, Michael Dunlop and Guy Martin.

All four recorded laps of over 112mph and they crossed the finish line within one second of each other.

But it was Guy Martin who took the victory, described by Maurice Mawdsley (play audio file):

Other wins on the day went to Roy Richardson, William Dunlop twice, Ryan Farquhar, Dave Madsen-Mygdal, Jamie O'Brien, Glyn Jones and Jason Slous, Dennis Booth and Steven McIlvenna.
