by isleofman.com 3rd July 2009

The Manx Bat Group is holding its annual sleepover in Kirk Michael this year, and members of the public with an interest in bats are being invited to come along.

The free event (to be held on 11th July) will consist of a talk on bats, with a focus on bats of the Isle of Man, at 8.30pm, followed by a bat walk around the village from dusk until midnight, where any bats encountered will be identified.

Participants can then take a rest in Kirk Michael Methodist Church Hall before rising just before dawn to see bats returning to their roosts.

Hot drinks and snacks will be provided by people staying overnight are being advised that they must bring their own bedding (sleeping bags, camping mats etc). A torch and warm clothing are recommended for the walk.

The sleepover is held each year in memory of Penny Gilman, a former chair and treasurer of the Manx Bat Group. Mrs Gilman believed strongly that young people should be encouraged to take an interest in wildlife; provided that they are accompanied by an adult, youngsters are particularly welcoem at this event.
