'Dream day' for Isle of Man in Aland

by isleofman.com 1st July 2009

The Isle of Man leapt from fifth to first in the NatWest Island Games medal table following an exceptional day, and there could be more to come.

In the past few minutes (3.45pm), 15 year old Grant Halsall has secured his second gold medal of the week, with victory in the men's 200 metres backstroke.

He also set a new games record for the event, at fractionally over two minutes.

Earlier this afternoon, archers Sarah Rigby and Aalin George, the Island's youngest competitor in Aland, completed a Manx one-two in the women's Recurve Head to Head knockout.

Alex Snell took gold in the same event for the men.

But the individual performance of the week came from gymnast Alex Hedges who took six golds, five on individual apparatus, plus the FIG Overall Individual title.

He says it's been a dream day (play audio file):

Following Grant Halsall's second gold the Isle of Man led the overall table, with 16 golds, 15 silvers and nine bronze medals.
