Council tenants told to smarten up their act

by isleofman.com 29th June 2009

Tenants of houses owned by Douglas Borough Council are being told to show some consideration to their neighbours.

The council is urging them to abide by the terms of their tenancy agreements and not behave anti-socially.

The new chairman of the Public Health and Housing Committee Councillor Colin Cain says:

"In the main our tenants are very responsible and take pride in their homes and surroundings. Regrettably, however, there is a minority with a less developed sense of social responsibility who, should they persist in antisocial behaviour, could find they are putting their tenancy agreements in jeopardy.

"We would have no hesitation in asking the police to intervene as we partner with both the Douglas and Eastern Neighbourhood policing teams and, as a result of this partnership, some tenants have already received Acceptable Behaviour Contracts."

Councillor Cain says the council is prepared to extend a month's grace to allow sub-letting issues to be resolved but is suggesting that, after that time, agreements could be terminated.

A reminder is being given that permission is required from the Town Hall, before tenants can take in lodgers.

If approval is given, a charge of ?10.40 is added to the weekly rent.
