'Houses should be nests, not nest eggs' - MHK

by isleofman.com 23rd June 2009

An MHK is attempting to introduce a Bill which he hopes will lead to restrictions on the ownership and occupancy of housing in the Isle of Man.

Onchan member Peter Karran is calling for the introduction of a special planning process and a new category of real property rights.

He will seek leave to introduce a Private Member's Bill at today's sitting.

Mr Karran wants tighter contols on who owns houses in the Island.

He told Manx Radio:

"I would like to see a situation where houses would be built with certain restrictions - you can't own them if you are a company, you can't own them if you aren't an Isle of Man worker, you can't rent them out, and they have to be owner-occupied by a person who owns no other residential property on the Island.

"I believe housing isn't a luxury, it's a necessity, and what my Bill will do is to try and put an emphasis on the aspect of creating nests for homes, not nest eggs for investment opportunity."
