Taste of the Wild at Manx Food Fayre

by isleofman.com 18th June 2009

Tynwald Day (Monday, 6th July) sees the launch of the second Manx Food Fayre and Woodland Discovery at DAFF's Forestry Division in St Johns.

Visitors will be able to taste food made with local produce and prepared by Relish Cookery School, pick up cookery tips from a variety of guest speakers and buy or sample Manx cheese, meat, seafood, vegetables, herbs, ice cream and sheepskin products.

In addition, there will be an opportunity to tour the nearby sawmill and visit the new Wildflowers of Mann nursery halfway between Tynwald Hill and the Gardens. Here, there will be plants and seeds to buy and lots of information about the Island’s rich and varied native flora.

Children can win a prize on the guided walk around Garey ny Cloie Gardens which starts at 2.30pm and there is a 30th anniversary walk around St Johns Arboretum (Tynwald National Park) starting at 12pm.

Visitors will also come face to face with marine mammals presented in the Cool Seas Roadshow, which features a life-sized 9 metre Basking Shark, a Risso’s Dolphin and a Leatherback Turtle. Staff will explain where these animals can be seen around the Island’s coast and how to get involved in local conservation projects.

DAFF Minister, Phil Gawne MHK said 'This popular event is a wonderful way to celebrate Tynwald Day and the Isle of Man, by tasting Manx produce and supporting local food producers, exploring the peaceful and scenic beauty of Garey ny Cloie Gardens and St Johns Arboretum and finding out about the treasures of our wildlife, from wild flowers to marine mammals. I do hope that our visitors will thoroughly enjoy the afternoon'.

The Cooking Theatre will be run by Kathryn Sentence of Relish Cookery School and guest speakers will be: Pentti Christian, Brassica Foods; Tim Croft, Island Seafare; Kathy Neale, Greeba Mushrooms; Joan Mowat, Tanrogan Restaurant and Allison Radcliffe, Laxey School recipe book.

Stallholders and exhibitors will include: IOM Meats; IOM Creamery; T & P Kermeen Butchers; Island Seafare; Staarvey Farm; Bryan Radcliffe vegetables; Island Sheepskin, Davison’s Ice Cream, Ard Jerkyll and B & M Catering.

The Manx Food Fayre takes place at Garey ny Cloie Gardens, Hope Road, St Johns, from 2pm to 5pm.
